Last trip of the month

Well after having a severe cold for the past 4 days I was finally able to get out and fish again. Shane and I headed to The Henrys Fork for some salmon fly action. I stood watching my second drift and about halfway through there was a massive explosion. After an epic battle this BEAUTY was brought to hand.
This is by far the best looking Brown I have ever caught. I have always seen those mustard yellow bellies in magazine articles and have always wanted to catch one. Today was that lucky day!

There was also a great hatch of golden stones on the banks and flying around mixed in with the salmon flies. Here is a close up of one. Do you think the trout can decipher between this and the salmon? The size isnt really to much different on the henrys fork. (at least this year)
We fished some different spots on Henrys and caught a few more but none that were picture worthy.
Then we stopped somewhere else and I pulled out this beauty.
After being stuck inside for 4 days other than leaving to suffer and cough my way through my classes, it was really nice to get out and fish. Catching pig browns on top was just icing on the cake.

Lean mean brown catching machine!

Heres what I have been tying lately! I am just getting into tying articulated streamers, and I can honestly say that I wish fall would get here so I can chase some spawning browns. What do you guys think? Do you think anything should be added to it?

EGGS, ARTICULATED STREAMERS, NYMPHS AND DRIES ALL IN ONE DAY

Shane and I went on a little camping trip this weekend and boy did we get into the fish. We both caught our personal best cutthroat this week. Fish came on a large assortment of flies. My most memorable fish came on a Circus Peanut, it smacked the heck out of it while I was kinda goofing off. I honestly wasnt even fishing when it hit, I was being stupid and tied it on just to get a chuckle out of fishing it. We also were able to get a few more sizable brookies on this outing also.

A little change of pace!

Well believe it or not, I have been getting tired of fishing salmon flies and decided I needed a break. NOT a break from fishing, just a break from fishing for browns on River X. Shane and I decided to head to a new spot and fish for some yellowstone cutts. We brought 63 fish to hand with about a dozen of them being brookies. It was one of the better trips of the year for me. I would say the average fish was 17 and we had about 2 dozen over 18. The flies of the day were larger egg patterns, and sanjaun worms as the second fly. I fished pink SJ worms and and Shane fished a red SJ. Here are some of the better pictures from the trip.

Shane with a beast of a Brookie

PINK San Juan produced the majority of the fish today for me
The biggest cutt from the trip. also the best looking. Thank goodness I hooked into it instead of shane
If this cutt wasn't spawned out it woulda been a tank
I am in love with this picture. This picture of this cutt really sums up the enjoyment of todays trip.
One of the few hybrids. I love how much more these trout fight compared to yellowstone cutts.

How Can You Not Enjoy This Time Of Year?

Well this is going to be yet another post about the SALMON FLIES. The fishing is fast and furious. Not only are you catching fish on top, but they explode on that big stonefly every time. The takes are epic. I cannot wait till the stone start popping on the Henrys Fork. I feel it will be within the next few weeks. Until then, River X will hold me over. Today my good friend Chris came along for his Maiden Voyage fishing a Salmon Fly hatch. He was like a kid in a candy store catching porker browns all day. Here are some pictures from the last few trips.

I was also rewarded with this nice Brookie.

Salmon Flies

Its been awhile since a new post has been up! Sorry about that guys. Its not that I havent been fishing, its just that, I have been fishing ALOT. Well today, Shane, his buddy Gage and I went to fish a river we all enjoy in a section thats off the beaten path. The section that we were fishing was in Targhee National Forest and as you can see from the hike out photo it was definately off the beaten path. We ended up with about 40 fish between the 3 of us with a bunch of nice browns and bows in the mix. The fish were taking rubberlegs with alot of gusto, So we all switched to big honkin salmon flies. we started slaughtering fish after that. I wasn't able to hook up with too many fish because I lost my right contact, -4.00 makes you kinda blind, and it threw off my sight at longer distances. Heck it was really any distance. But I still managed about a half dozen on the salmon fly. They are super early this year, It wont be long till the Henrys Fork action starts. I found a few on the banks that I took pictures of also in case anyone hasnt ever seen one. For size comparison they are about 3 inches in length. Also stop by shanes blog and check it out. www.thefishhunterchronicles.wordpress.com

Shane caught this beautiful brown.....Probably the best looking brown I have seen caught In Idaho. Looks just like the good old Pennsylvania browns.

Me with my best brownie of the trip
 gotta love the rubberlegs

Immature bald eagle just chilled while we fished right in front of him

The hike back out after fishing about 3 miles of river rewarded us with this view.

Some Salmon flies that I tied up in preperaton for this year. (tied up a few more dozen also)
